The Story

In an attempt to fill the deep void left by her father’s death, the daughter of progressive revolutionary Marcus Raskin sets out to investigate his life as a public figure. In doing so she is forced to grapple with new revelations about his indictment for protesting the Vietnam War, his role in releasing the Pentagon Papers, and the assassination of his colleagues on US soil.

This vulnerable and penetrating examination of Marcus’ legacy by his family and the people who knew him best, including his son, Congressman Jamie Raskin, breathes life into this inspirational story drawing direct lines between the groundwork laid by his work sixty years ago and the fight to protect democracy today.

The viewer will join Marcus’ daughter on her journey as she is confronted with stunning discoveries of a tumultuous time in the 1960s/70s when he was indicted with the Boston Five for Vietnam Draft Resistance, co-founded a first of its kind progressive think tank that was infiltrated by the FBI, helped release the Pentagon Papers, and was devastated by the assassination of two colleagues orchestrated by a foreign dictator just blocks from Marcus’ office. Through the archives he left behind, the music he played, and intimate conversations, we explore how a piano prodigy from Wisconsin shook up Washington by becoming the conscience of Kennedy’s White House, a proud member of Nixon’s Enemies List, and ultimately a founder of the modern progressive movement whose ideas and values we rely on to this day.
